“And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” Acts 1:26
So what happened next? Well, the Book of Acts says nothing about it, but I think we can safely say the Apostles accepted the outcome as God’s will. Likely there were some apostles who would have preferred Joseph and others Matthias - that’s human nature. However, we do not see the “pro-Joseph” camp accusing or disparaging the other side. Likewise, we do not see the “pro-Matthias” camp gloating, insulting, humiliating, or otherwise acting in an untoward manner.
So that’s what we don’t see. But what do we see? The coming of the Holy Spirit - a blessing for all the Apostles and for the world.
Our election has been decided. Some will be happy and others will be disappointed. For the rest of the country, the chips will fall as they will fall, but Christians are not called to be “the rest of the county.” We ought follow the example of the Apostles who trusted in God. They acted with acceptance and humility and they continued on in the way of Jesus.
In the end we choose the Lamb - not an elephant or donkey - for our peace, joy, and well-being.
Prayer: Lord God, we give you thanks that you have established our nation by your grace. We pray for peace and healing following the election of President-Elect Trump. We pray for his well-being and safety. We pray for the well-being of Vice President Harris and President Biden. As we move forward help us to remember the words of Jesus, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Do not allow us to be overtaken by a spirit of despair, anger, pride or vengeance, but let us rejoice in the knowledge that ultimately you are our sovereign Lord. Amen.
