“And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.’” Mark 10:23-25
Does having wealth preclude a person from entering the Kingdom of Heaven? We should hope not. If that were the case few people would make it, because everyone is wealthier than someone else. America’s “poor,” for example, are some of the richest people in the world compared to those of other nations. I have personally heard people with cars, homes, and money in the bank claim to be poor because they didn’t have the house, cars, and money possessed by someone else.
People of Jesus’ day, saw wealth and possessions as signs of God’s favor. Jesus tells us no one will be saved based on what they have or what they do. The rich, young man Jesus referenced had many possessions (supposedly signs of God’s favor), and he had kept the law since his youth (a sign of obedience), yet his heart was far from God.
There are many people in the church who do “good works,” but they simply go through the motions. Outwardly, they look good, but inwardly their hearts are far from God.
Jesus tells us we cannot buy the Kingdom of God with wealth, blessings, merits, or the keeping of the law. Salvation comes only by grace through faith in Jesus. We must rely upon Him and Him alone.
Prayer: Lord God, thank you for the gift of faith in Christ that brings salvation. May I always trust in you above my own worth and works. For it is only in you that I find my true wellbeing. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
