“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15–17
It seems like yesterday we were in the yard spraying ourselves off with the garden hose to beat the heat. Now we are putting on the fireplace in the early morning and enjoying the cool of the evening. Even our music has changed from breezy Italian classics that evoke visions of sunshine and lemons. Now we listen to folkier tunes about campfires and clear mountain mornings.
Why? This last week has been unseasonably cool and has put autumn in our minds. The weatherman says it’s a meteorological anomaly - cold air swirling down from arctic Canada. Still, we are reminded that autumn will be hear soon.
Time marches on. No one can hold onto the sunny days of summer, to youth, to yesterday - except maybe in their hearts, where we either embrace them fondly or lament their passing. It’s our choice.
God’s Word calls us to make the best use of each day, according to His will. We live in a world, in which there is much evil and many chances to go astray. There are many chances to misuse our time. There are many ways to use our days in ways that lead to destruction rather than peace and eternal life. Let us not be foolish but seek to understand God’s will and do that will with joy. Let us do good while we have the time to do it. Let us not “Dali.”
Prayer: Lord God, guide me this day and always so that I might do your good and perfect will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
