“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first nations, to whom the house of Israel comes… Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches and eat lamb from the flock, and calves from the midst of the stall.” Amos 6:1-4
When we become comfortable in our lives, comfort becomes the goal. We have comfort and want more of it. Comfort leads to complacency. Complacency leads to apathy.
Outside of the church, the comfortable say, “What do I need from God? I have all I want.” In the church we often see comfort - material wealth - as a sign that we are right with God. “I must be doing well, look at all the stuff God blesses me with?” This can lead us to thinking we do not need to humble ourselves before God and seek his forgiveness.
If pride goes before a fall, comfort isn’t too far behind in leading people down the primrose path of destruction.
Prayer: Lord God, the greatest blessing you have given me is yourself. You gave yourself in the person of the Son to redeem me and in the person of the Holy Spirit to convict me heart and to call me to repentance and forgiveness. Continue to shake me out of my earthly comfort to live for you and for others. This I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
