“Behold how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity. It is like the precious oil on the head, running down the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.” Psalm 133
Thursdays always fills me with great joy as our men’s prayer group gathers around the breakfast table to start our day with food and the Word. Equally important is the fellowship. How great and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity.
How great is it? Well, it is a blessing from God - an anointing liked the blessing of Aaron as the first priest to serve in God’s tabernacle. It is nothing less than a blessing from God to dwell in unity with like-minded followers of Christ - though we might not agree on everything. How wonderful it is to pray together and discuss God’s Word in light of our daily lives.
How great is it? Well, it is like the dew of Hermon that brings life-giving moisture to a parched landscape. Fellowship is truly necessary for life to flourish. Just as the driest desert benefits from water that bring forth life, so too do each of us benefit from fellowship with one another.
Jesus had his 12. Each disciple was sent out in pairs. Paul and Silas went out together. Even God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - one God but three distinct persons. It is not good that man should be alone, a three-fold cord is not easily broken, and where two or three are gathered in Jesus name…
Yes, friends, fellowship is a blessing that brings life and nowhere is this blessing more evident than in the church - whether in or out of worship.
Prayer: Lord God, it is right and good to for your children to live together in unity. I give you thanks that we are able to join together in love and faith, to which you call us. Let me not be isolated from you and the body of Christ, making myself easy pray for the Evil One. Rather lead me to your house and your people where I may find joy. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
