“The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.” Proverbs 21:6
This reading from Proverbs is simple enough. Ill-gotten gain only brings temporary pleasure and will eventually lead to ruin - if not in this world then in the next, when all stand before God, but is material treasure the only thing we can gain unworthily? How often do we get the treasure of social acceptance, how often do we avoid conflict - by just going along with the world? How often do we reap the treasure of “getting along” by “going along” through the denial of God’s Word. We touched on this at men’s breakfast yesterday.
Saying good is evil and evil good is to have a lying tongue. In doing so, we lie to ourselves, to the world, and to God. You can only “do your own thing” in opposition to His Word for so long until the bill comes due. There are consequences. We cannot choose our own truth, for there is only one truth - God’s Word.
Prayer: Lord Holy Spirit, lead and guide me by your Word into true faith. Help me to seek righteousness and not be conformed to the evils of this world. When I falter through my own sin and foolishness, restore me through a contrite and repentant heart so that I might seek forgiveness through the sacrifice of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in whose name I pray. Amen.
