“For everything there is a season, and time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what you planted.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
As I look out the window I am reminded that this reading from the bible is absolute gold. The days grow shorter. The nights grow longer. The temperatures are dropping … along with the leaves, and the garden has just about give up all that it has to give. Now it’s time for a rest. The Nat King Cole song Tis Autumn comes to mind, “The trees are tired. They’ve bourn too much fruit.”
In the midst of our recent Indian Summer a women made an off-handed comment as she passed me at Trader Joe’s, “Nice weather. We’ll pay for it.” I hear others grump about the coming cold - after running the A/C hard enough to freeze beef all summer. We people are a discontented lot. We always look to the remembered past and dread the supposed future, rather than living in the moment that God has for us and being grateful.
There is a time for everything. And all things bring their good. The summer brought warmth and growth, the fall brings harvest, the winter will bring rest, and spring will bring renewal. Life is the same way. So, whatever season you are in rejoice. It has its purpose and it is a gift from God.
“Prayer: Lord God, may I be ever thankful, ever grateful, and ever joyful for what the seasons of the year and of life bring. Amen.
