“We need to hear the Gospel every day because we forget it every day.” Martin Luther
That’s really what a Daily Devotional is all about. That’s what reading your Bible daily is all about. That’s what worshiping regularly is all about. New insights are wonderful, but God’s Word is not about novelty.
Each morning when I wake up and several times throughout the day I tell my wife I love her and she tells me she loves me. There is nothing novel about these declarations. They are reminders because in the world - especially in this world where we are tempted by the sin of loving oneself over the other - it is easy to forget how much we love and are loved.
God’s Gospel message to us is nothing less than His love letter to us signed in the blood of His Son upon the Cross. Your sins are forgiven for the sake of Christ when you honestly repent and seek the gift of reconciliation BECAUSE God loves you that much1.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for giving me your Son to be my savior. I thank you that you loved me so much that you sacrificed the one most precious to you FOR ME. Keep me from forgetting the great gift that I have been given. In faith, cause me to use this gift as you gave it. Give me a repentant and faithful heart. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
16 “For God so loved the world,[a] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.” John 3:16-20
