“But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” Luke 10:40
It’s easy to become distracted. I know. I have often gone online to look up something important only to be led astray by endless Youtube videos of such importance as Why Victorian Bathrooms Were so Dangerous.1 However, there are other distractions that are important, such as Fiona who after eating breakfast and taking her post-breakfast nap requires attention.
Yes! It is easy to become distracted in life - not only by the frivolous but the important. A lot of things compete for our attention - and many deserve it. Unfortunately, we often push our faith life to the side. The works God calls us to do are pushed off until everything else is done. Prayer becomes a few words quickly spoken. Engaging with the Word of God goes no further than a daily devotional, and the neighbor we are called to love receives little thought. Why? Because we are just so busy - often with distractions that do not matter or matter a bit less than we think.
Do not let yourselves be weighed down by the things of this world to the point of neglecting God and others. Choose what is best and do everything else in light of the love to which you are called.
Prayer: Lord God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, do not let me be distracted by the things of this world so that I neglect you and my neighbor. Help me to have clarity of mind and the will to focus on the important things first. Amen.
